You can change your theory test date for free on GOV.UK, as long as you give at least 3 full working days’ notice. Saturday counts as a working day, but Sundays and public holidays do not. The 10 full working days’ notice you may have heard about applies to the car practical driving test only, not the theory test.
Moving your theory test back does not mean putting everything else on hold. You can start beginner driving lessons on your provisional licence while you revise, and seeing the rules on real roads makes them easier to remember.
Theory test rules are different from practical test rules
Changing a theory test follows different rules from changing a car practical driving test. DVSA tightened the practical test rules in 2025 and 2026, but not the theory test rules.
| Theory test | Car practical test | |
|---|---|---|
| Notice to change or cancel for free | 3 full working days | 10 full working days |
| Number of changes allowed | No limit mentioned on GOV.UK | 2 per booking |
| Where you can move it to | A different theory test centre | One of the 3 nearest centres, or the one you first booked |
| Fee | £23 on any day | £62 on weekdays, £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays |

DVSA’s guidance on the 2026 driving test booking rules says the new rules only apply to car driving tests. The 2-change limit, the rule that only the learner can book or change a test, and the 3 nearest centres rule all leave the theory test untouched. The 10 full working days’ notice period has applied to car practical tests since 8 April 2025.
If it is your practical test you need to move, our guide to changing your practical driving test covers the car practical test rules in full.
How much notice do you need to change your theory test?
You need to give at least 3 full working days’ notice to change your theory test without paying again, or to cancel it and get your £23 back. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not, and neither the day you make the change nor the test day itself counts towards the 3 days.
In a normal week with no bank holidays, the last day to change your theory test for free is:
| Your theory test is on | Last day to change online | Last day to change by phone |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Wednesday before | Wednesday before |
| Tuesday | Thursday before | Thursday before |
| Wednesday | Friday before | Friday before |
| Thursday | Saturday before | Friday before |
| Friday | Monday before | Monday before |
| Saturday | Tuesday before | Tuesday before |
| Sunday | Wednesday before | Wednesday before |
Based on DVSA’s working day rule: Monday to Saturday count, Sundays and public holidays do not.
A Saturday deadline cannot be met by phone. DVSA’s theory test phone line is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, so when the last day to change is a Saturday, the latest you can do it by phone is the Friday before.
Bank holidays push theory test deadlines earlier, because a bank holiday inside the 3-day window does not count as a working day. Around Christmas, New Year and Easter, the last day to change can move several days earlier than usual, so count back as soon as you know you need to move your test.
How to change your theory test date online or by phone
The quickest way to change your theory test date is the GOV.UK change your theory test appointment service. You need your UK driving licence number. The service lets you:
- find an earlier theory test
- move your theory test to a later date
- change which theory test centre you take it at
With at least 3 full working days’ notice, changing your theory test is free. There is no rescheduling fee and no need to pay a third-party website.
You can also change your theory test by phone on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, or by email at [email protected]. DVSA asks for your full name as it appears on your driving licence, your date of birth, your address and postcode, your driving licence number and your booking reference number. If you have lost your confirmation email, the GOV.UK check your theory test service shows your test date, time and centre using your licence number.
Moving a theory test is usually the easy part. Getting the deadline right is what saves you the £23.
“I’ve had pupils move test times, but I’ve never really had anyone have any issues with moving or cancelling a test.”
Gurpreet Bhogal, Select Drive instructor
Can you change your theory test at short notice?
You can still change or cancel a theory test inside the 3 full working days, but it costs you. Changing at short notice means paying the £23 fee again, and cancelling at short notice means losing the original fee.
You can get a refund for a short-notice change or cancellation if you have:
- an illness or injury that means you cannot take your test
- suffered a bereavement
- a school or college exam at the same time as your test
- had your driving licence stolen
To claim a short-notice refund, email [email protected] with the subject ‘Unavoidable short notice cancellation’. Attach proof, such as a fit note, a letter from your school or college confirming the exam, or a crime number and the police officer’s contact name for a stolen licence. Include your full name as it appears on your licence, your address, postcode and date of birth, plus your driving licence number or booking reference. If you were ill for 7 days or fewer, you might have to pay for a private medical certificate.
A lost licence is not on the refund list, only a stolen one. You need your driving licence to sit the theory test, and a replacement can take up to 15 days to arrive. If your licence goes missing, apply for a replacement straight away and move your test while you still have 3 full working days’ notice.
Not feeling ready is not one of DVSA’s refund reasons. If your revision is behind, move your theory test before the deadline rather than after it.
If you change your name after booking, take proof such as a marriage certificate or deed poll to your test. Without proof, GOV.UK says you must cancel your theory test and book a new one in your new name, using your new driving licence number.
How to get an earlier theory test date without paying for a checker
The GOV.UK change service shows earlier theory test dates as well as later ones, so you can look for an earlier slot yourself for free. Availability changes, so check more than once.
Paid cancellation checkers charge a fee to watch for earlier theory test appointments on your behalf, but the GOV.UK change service is free to check yourself. If you have not booked yet, book on GOV.UK too. The official theory test fee is £23 on any day of the week, and GOV.UK warns that unofficial websites usually charge more.
Checking more than one test centre widens your options. Around Birmingham, the choices are Birmingham and Birmingham B on Great Charles Street, Dudley on Kings Street and Sutton Coldfield. In our experience the city centre is the busiest, while the Dudley theory test centre is quieter and often has earlier slots. Our guide to the Birmingham theory test centre shows which centre is nearest to Quinton, Oldbury and Halesowen.
What happens if DVSA cancels your theory test?
If DVSA cancels your theory test with less than 3 full working days’ notice, you can claim expenses on GOV.UK. You have to claim within 6 months of the cancelled test date. You can claim for:
- travel to and from the test centre on the day, including 25p per mile if you drove or got a lift
- lost pay from unpaid leave, up to half a day’s take-home pay, with a letter or email from your employer
- other reasonable costs you paid because you were due to sit the test
You cannot claim expenses if the theory test was cancelled because of bad weather, or if you could not attend yourself. DVSA usually replies within 6 weeks, and successful claims are paid by cheque to the address on your driving licence.
Where moving your theory test fits with your driving lessons
You have to pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test. Moving your theory test later also pushes back the earliest date you can book your practical.
A theory test pass lasts 2 years. If you have not passed your practical test in that time, you have to pass the theory test again.
The practical test is far less flexible once it is booked, with 10 full working days’ notice to change it for free and only 2 changes per booking. Because of those limits, book your practical for a date you are realistically ready by. Your instructor can help you judge when that will be.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my theory test date more than once?
GOV.UK’s theory test pages do not mention a limit on how many times you can change your test. The 2-change limit introduced on 31 March 2026 applies to car practical tests only. Each theory test change is free as long as you give 3 full working days’ notice.
Can I change my theory test the day before?
Yes, but you will have to pay the £23 fee again, because the day before is inside the 3 full working days. You can only get that money back for one of DVSA’s accepted reasons: illness or injury, bereavement, a school or college exam, or a stolen licence.
Can I change my theory test centre as well as the date?
Yes. The GOV.UK change service lets you move to a different theory test centre as well as a different date, with the same 3 full working days’ notice.
Is it DVSA or DVLA that handles theory tests?
DVSA, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, runs theory tests and handles changes on 0300 200 1122. DVLA deals with driving licences, including replacing a lost one.
I failed my theory test. Do I change my booking?
No. You book a new theory test instead, and the new date has to be at least 3 working days away. You retake the whole test, even if you passed one of the two parts.
How do I change a theory test in Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland has a separate booking service on nidirect, with its own process for changing and cancelling theory tests.
Count back, change early and keep your lessons going
Changing your theory test date is quick and free on GOV.UK as long as you give 3 full working days’ notice, with Saturday counting as a working day and Sunday not. If you want an earlier slot, check Dudley as well as the city centre.
While you revise, our beginner driving lessons run across Quinton, Oldbury, Halesowen and the surrounding areas, in a premium fleet. You can start on your provisional licence before you have passed your theory test.
