What Our Customers Say
“First of all Gurps is a legend. I started an intensive driving course 1.5 months ago and I have just passed my driving test. He’s an extremely good teacher and has great attention to detail. If you’re thinking about booking, just do it. You won’t regret it. Big bonus that the car you will learn to drive in is amazing.”
“Cannot reccomend enough!! I was recommended Gurps through a relative after struggling with my former instructor. Gurps is very professional, motivating and extremely patient. He is a great teacher and really lovely too. Passed with only 1 minor fault too :) Thank you for everything”
“I had a really good experience with my driving instructor. I would definitely recommend them to anyone learning to drive.”
“Passed first time today thanks to Amarjit’s wonderful teaching. He always believed in me even when I doubted myself right up until my test and I couldn’t have wished for a better instructor. The lessons each week felt like just chatting to a friend and I couldn’t recommend him highly enough. Thank you Amarjit I will miss you!”

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do driving lessons in Birmingham cost?
Driving lesson prices in Birmingham typically range from £28 to £40 per hour depending on the school and whether you choose manual or automatic. At Select Drive, our manual driving lessons start from £33 per hour and automatic driving lessons from £35 per hour. That includes pickup and drop-off from your home, college, or workplace across all of our service areas. We also offer intensive driving courses with custom pricing based on how many hours you need. Give us a call on 0800 334 5006 to discuss the best option for you.
How many driving lessons do I need to pass?
The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional tuition combined with 22 hours of private practice for the average learner. In reality, it varies a lot depending on your confidence, how often you practise between lessons, and how quickly you pick things up. Some of our learners have been test-ready in under 30 hours, while others prefer to take things slower and build up over a few months. Your instructor will give you an honest assessment of where you are and won't put you forward for your test until you're genuinely ready. That's one of the benefits of learning with experienced, DVSA-registered instructors who have been teaching across Birmingham for over 20 years.
Should I learn in a manual or automatic?
It depends on what you plan to drive long term. A manual licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars, so it gives you more flexibility. An automatic licence only covers automatics. That said, automatic lessons tend to be easier for beginners because there's no clutch or gear changes to worry about, which means some learners pass faster. At Select Drive, you can learn manual in our BMW 1 Series M Sport or automatic in our Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG. Both are modern, comfortable cars that make learning a lot more enjoyable. If you're not sure which is right for you, we're happy to chat it through before you book.
How long does an intensive driving course take?
Most intensive driving courses run between one and four weeks, depending on your experience level and how many hours you book. A complete beginner might need a 30 to 40 hour course spread over two to three weeks, while someone with some experience who needs to get test-ready quickly could manage it in one to two weeks. Intensive courses are a great option if you need your licence by a specific date or prefer to learn without long gaps between lessons. We tailor every intensive course to the individual, so get in touch and we'll put together a plan that works for your schedule and your budget.
Do I need to pass my theory test before starting driving lessons?
No, you can start taking driving lessons as soon as you have your provisional licence. You don't need to have passed your theory test first. However, you do need to pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test, so it's worth starting to study early. Your instructor will help you with theory preparation as part of your lessons, covering topics like road signs, hazard perception, and the rules of the road as you encounter them during your drives. Many of our learners study for their theory alongside their practical lessons and sit the test around halfway through their course.
What areas in Birmingham do you cover?
We cover a wide range of areas across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Our main service areas include Quinton, Oldbury, Halesowen, Rowley Regis, Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Harborne, Smethwick, and Bearwood. We know these areas inside out, including the local roads, junctions, and roundabouts you'll encounter during your lessons and on your test. Our learners typically take their practical test at South Yardley, Shirley, or Kingstanding test centres, and our instructors are familiar with all of the common test routes. If your area isn't listed, give us a call and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
